Summer is for grilling

Hawaiian Shish Kabobs

10 large mushrooms
2 zucchinis
1 onion
1 fresh pineapple
3-4 chicken breasts
½ pack of bacon
skewers
Mr. Yoshida’s Original Recipe Marinade
3 cups white rice
nonstick cooking spray

Slice chicken, onion, zucchinis, into bite sliced pieces and add to a large Tupperware container. Cut mushrooms in half and add to container. Pour 1 ½ cup of Mr. Yoshida’s marinade into container. Close lid and turn upside down to evenly mix the marinade in container. Let it marinade in the fridge for an hour. Meanwhile cut up pineapple into bite sized pieces, cook rice according to directions on the package, and soak wooden skewers in water so they won’t burn on the grill. When hour of marinating is up cut bacon pack in half. Preheat grill to med-high. Place ingredients out and start loading the skewers. I’ve found that a Mushroom half works the best to keep the food from slipping off the skewers. Wrapping a ½ strip of bacon wrapped chicken pieces on each skewer. Only load 2 bacon wrapped chicken pieces on each skewer. (I have caught my grill on fire with too much bacon grease) Once the skewers are loaded spray both sides with cooking spray.
Grill kabobs about 7 minutes on each side. Serve with soy sauce and white rice.

My husband won't eat store bought salsa anymore

The Pioneer Woman's Pico de Gallo Salsa

5 roma tomatoes
1 onion
1 jalapeno pepper
1 bunch cilantro
lime juice
salt
(food processor if available)

Rinse cilantro with water and pull of leaves and set aside. Slice tomatoes and onion into small sections. Slice pepper into fine slices (use the plastic grocery sack to hold the pepper as you slice so the juices won’t burn your skin). Add (all but lime juice) to food processor and use until ingredients are finely chopped. Put chopped ingredients into a bowl and add lime juice and stir. Keep in the fridge.

My Digital Bookshelf

I'm so excited about my new book shelf widget. Check it out under the About Me section under the jewelry photos on the left side of the page.

God hides treasures in the earth

Moonstone has a translucent or milky quality and has an appearance of inner light.
Carnelian from India, its primary source, is placed in the sun to change the brown tint to red.
Fossilized Coral is formed the same way as fossilized wood, through centuries of extreme pressure. The coral is patterned with cross sections of coral branches that have a floral look.
Amazonite durives its name from the Amazon River. Amozonite has an opaque, pastel blue green color.

Crock Pot Dinner

During the summer in AZ I like to fill the crock pot and put it on the back patio so I don't heat up the house.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

2-1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil
6 (6 inch) corn tortillas, into ½ inch strips
3 cups chicken broth
1-Taco seasoning packet
½ teaspoons ground cumin
½ chili powder
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
4 cups frozen whole kernel corn, thawed and steamed
2 skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut I halves cut into bite sized pieces, cook until not longer pink
1/2 cup salsa (Pica de Gallo or add some regular salsa)
½ cup fresh cilantro (save half for garnish)
2 cups cheddar cheese (save half for garnish)

Directions: Heat 2 teaspoons of the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Cook half of the tortilla strips stirring often, until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Repeat with the remaining tortilla strips and set aside.

Cook chicken until no longer pink. In another pot add the broth, cumin, chili powder, and oregano until boiling, then stir and simmer. Add the rest of ingredients (leaving out ½ the cilantro and ½ the cheese to use as a garnish). Ladle into individual bowls and enjoy.

Beading Materials and Techniques

My favorite materials to work with are: Swarovski crystals, seed beads, gemstones, pearls, antique copper findings, and cabochon gemstones.
I've become especially fascinated by all the different gemstones and rocks that are made naturally in the earths crust. (God is so creative!). Rockhounding (hunting for gems, and other natural minerals) is very intriguing to me. I've met some people on Etsy.com that rockhound for a living. Here is a great site to look more into rockhounding stonesthatrock.net

Favorite techniques: right-angle weaves, spiral ropes, cheveron chains, and St.Petersburg weave. (I'm always looking for new patterns to learn). I've recently learned how to use cabochons (gemstones cut with and domed surface and flat back) as centerpieces in my jewelry. I love to sew seed beads around the cab in intricate designs. The book that inspired me to learn bead sewing and embellishing is (Beading with cabochons : simple techniques for beautiful jewelry by Jamie Cloud Eakin. I love to look at all the beautiful gems that people find in the earth .My favorite Etsy seller for cabochons is dalerocks09.
Next, I want to learn how to use wire. I want to do wire wrapping around unusual shaped cabs that are harder to bead around symmetrically.

My Book Club

My life has been enriched by being part of a book club for the past 5 years. We read and discuss one book a month usually over coffee. I've discovered things about my friends in the group that I may never have without the different topics the books have raised. I have had such a good time in my book club and learned a lot about myself in the process.

How I started beading

I began beading 7 years ago by making birthday gifts for my daughter's friends. Over the years I have enjoyed learning new techniques and now my family and friends expect jewelry for gifts. I love to spend my free time beading and marvel at the variety and beauty of the crystals, pearls and gemstones that God has made.

My beaded creations have been tested on animals. My dog, Chester, is my jewelry model. Don't worry, no animals were harmed in the process. In fact, Chester was well compensated with his favorite treats.

My jewelry website is on etsy. This is the link: http://desertdogdesigns.etsy.com
